Mental Health Awareness for the African Diaspora
As we enjoy summer, let us talk about something that affects many of us but rarely gets discussed.
Dr. Daniel Amen’s research shows people from sun-rich regions like Africa experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) more intensely when living in Europe or North America with limited winter sunlight.
During those long winter months, many of us struggle in silence. We think it is just adjusting to a new country, when actually our bodies are responding to real environmental change.
Moving from Africa’s consistent sunshine to harsh winters affects our energy levels and sleep patterns, our mood and focus, and our overall mental health.
I remember my first winter in France — shorter days, feeling tired constantly, thinking something was wrong with me.
Now that we are feeling better, let us understand what happened and prepare for next winter.
Solutions that help: light therapy boxes, vitamin D supplements (with medical guidance), regular movement outdoors, and professional mental health support.
